Description: Kahal Kadosh Shaar Asamaim (Holy Congregation of the Gates of Heaven) opened in 1701, nearly fifty years after its Sephardi community arrived in London from Amsterdam; it is now the only synagogue in Europe which has held regular services continuously for over 300 years. Its elegant design reflects the striking contemporary design of the Portuguese Synagogue of Amsterdam (1675) and the splendid City of London churches of Sir Christopher Wren. Its treasures include sumptuous Georgian silver and textiles, with many examples of work by the Hugueneot émigrés of neighbouring Spitalfields.
