Friday 8 October 2pm - IN DEPTH-ST BRIDE FLEET STREET

St Bride Fleet Street

We intend to mount a series of in-depth visits to individual churches,  to give more time to learn something about them and explore them.

Meet at 1.50pm outside the north, churchyard entrance to St Bride (off Fleet Street); the nearest underground stations are Temple, and St Paul's; over-ground trains stop at Blackfriars and City Thameslink stations. St Bride's Church, the 'Phoenix  of Fleet Street', has good claims to being one of the oldest in the City. With its famous ‘wedding cake' steeple, and its centuries-old associations with Printing and publishing, the church's roots reach back to Roman times. This is a comprehensive tour of one of the best-loved City churches taking in the church and the crypt museum. There will also be a rare opportunity to visit the famous Charnel House, with its skulls and 'chequerboard' pattern of bones, which is not normally open to members of the general public

Thursday 21 October 10.30 - VISIT: INNER & MIDDLE TEMPLE + LUNCH

Meet Temple tube

A repeat by Brian Jenkins, a past FCC treasurer, of this popular visit. Price of 130 includes coffee, a tour of Inner and Middle Temple, Temple Church, including a donation to the church, followed by a buffet lunch (excluding wine). Numbers restricted, so apply early. Lounge suits please. We begin the tour with coffee and biscuits in the Middle  Temple Hall. Then Brian will take us for a gentle stroll looking at the various buildings and listening to some of the fascinating history of the site, visiting the beautiful Temple Church (subject to availability), one of the few surviving churches in this country with a round nave. We then have lunch in the Middle Temple Hall, where the tour ends.

In Tudor and Stuart times the Hall was used for lavish entertainments and it is said that Shakespeare's Twelfth Night had its Première there. Barristers dine there daily. You will have seen the flyer about the new book about the Temple Church (right), to be reviewed in a later newsletter. Another reason to come!

Thursday 28 October 2 pm - ART TOUR AT MANSION HOUSE

The Harold Samuel Bequest with Karen Chester

Meet at 1.50pm outside the Walbrook entrance to Mansion House; the nearest underground station is Bank. In the 1950s and 60s, the property developer Harold Samuel assembled the most distinguished private collection of Dutch and Flemish l7th Century paintings in England since the war. When Lord Samuel died in 1987, he bequeathed 84 of his pictures to the Corporation of the City of London, with the wish that they be housed at the Mansion House. This very personal collection consists mostly of small, intimate cabinet pictures. There are landscapes and genre pictures featuring artists such as Jan Steen, Jan van der Heyden, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Hals and Nicolaes Maes. Altogether they provide a fascinating insight into the Dutch Golden Age, and into the character and personality of Lord Samuel himself.

Please note that this is not a tour of the House itself. You will, however, see many of the lavish state rooms on the first floor as we take in the pictures.

(Karen is our Office Administrator, a City of London Guide and the Tours Co-ordinator for Guildhall Art Gallery and the Art Tours in Mansion House.)
