Pre-Great fire, the Augustinian Priory of St Bartholomew was founded in 1123 by Rahere, a courtier at Henry I, whose 15th century tomb is in the sanctuary. The remarkable quire and crossing of the Norman Church remain, restored by Sir Aston Webb (1884-1906) and one alley of the Cloister.
