Description: Medieval All Hallows was a daughter church of wealthy Barking Abbey, Essex. Standing on the eastern edge of the City, it survived the Great Fire of 1666, which Pepys observed from its tower, but suffered severe damage in the devasting air raid of 29 December 1940. It was handsomely restored under the direction of John Seely, 2nd Baron Mottisone, and finally rededicated in 1957. Bomb damage revealed a Roman floor and Anglo-Saxon foundations, now preserved in the crypt museum alongside mementos of rector the Revd Philip 'Tubby' Clayton, founder of the charity Toc H, and entries in the parish register for the baptism of William Penn, for whom Pennsylvania was named, and the marriage of future American President John Quincy Adams.
