| History | Originally founded by the Saxon Abbey of Barking (Berkynge) in the seventh century and owes much to mediaeval adaptations. Sometimes called All Hallows Barking. Badly damaged during the Second World war when only the tower and walls remained. Restored by Lord Mottistone in 1957 who added the spire to the brick tower to emphasise its new prominence after nearby buildings had disappeared. At that time the Vicar was "Tubby" Clayton who had founded "Toc H" at the Church after the First World War. The site dates back to a Saxon Church in 676. Its restoration was brilliantly accomplished and the present building retains many elements of its centuries of fabric. | |
